At the start of the second millennium B.C. It was a Minoan colony and in 424 B.C. it came under the sway of Athens. Over the centuries it knew a succession of conquerors from the Romans to the Byzantines, Venetians and Turks, and it was frequently looted by Barbary pirates. The main town was completely destroyed in 1537 by the notorious Barbarossa. Kithira will appeal to those who are in search of a quiet holiday. Prospective visitors should be warned that accommodation is extremely limited at the height of summer and that the bus service between villages is not as frequent as might be desired.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row use_custom_gutter=”on” An important attraction of the area is the cave of Agia Sophia, richly decorated with stalagmites and stalactites, which ranks among the most beautiful places in Greece. One can bathe in nearby Limniona. Mitata is one of the oldest villages of the island, since it is mentioned in texts from around 1120. Their name comes etymologically, according to the most popular opinion, from the Homeric word “apples” (meadow, pasture) which over the centuries suffered corruption and we ended up with the name Mitata.

The village has a verdant natural environment to show with the verdant ravine that opens at its feet. The area is very fertile and famous for its delicious fruits. If you happen to be on the island in August, you can enjoy Tsirigo wine for free, since the wine festival is organized annually in Mitata. It is worth a visit to the chapel of Agios Georgios as well as the so-called “hidden school”, a small, invisible chapel located in a hole, right below Agios Georgios. Aulemonas, in the middle of the east coast, has a particularly safe small port and is famous for its clean sea and fresh fish, which are served as a main dish in the taverns of the area. It was named so probably because of the grooved shape and the great depth of its port, while its ancient name was Phoenician Port. A short distance from Aulemonas is the small but beautiful beach of Kaladio. The visitor will encounter some difficulties in access, since he will have to travel a few kilometers on a dirt road and go down 100 steps, however the transparent waters will compensate anyone who wants to swim in Kaladi, which is also called the “place of lovers”.

Just before Kaladi is the area of Skandia, an ancient port of the island with great historical interest. Diakofti is the main gateway to the island, as the ferry from Piraeus, Gytheio and Neapoli of Laconia arrives here, from where there are daily routes to and from Kythira. The settlement developed after the construction of the port and has to offer the visitor a beautiful beach with fine sand and clear waters. On the outskirts of the settlement is the cave of Houstis. It has no natural decoration, but it is of great interest, because, as it was found, they have been inhabited since the early Bronze Age, while various objects, mainly tributes, were also found.

Heading from the other side of the island, you will meet the picturesque Cypriot, Aloisian, Kastrisian, Friligian and you will reach Aroniadika with its special architectural features. A little further north you will find Pitsinades, a village with houses of traditional architecture, most of which, however, stand in ruins. Despite this, the settlement has been reviving in recent years, since many buildings have been restored following the traditional lines.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ disabled_on=”on|on|on” admin_label=”Header” _builder_version=”4.18.0″ custom_padding=”0px||8px|||” disabled=”on” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ padding_top_bottom_link_1=”false” padding_top_bottom_link_2=”false” _builder_version=”4.18.0″ width=”100%” max_width=”none” module_alignment=”left” custom_padding=”0px||0px||false|” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.18.0″ background_color=”#007dc1″ custom_padding=”90px|120px|140px|10vw” custom_padding_tablet=”60px|10vw|60px|10vw|true|true” custom_padding_phone=”60px|10vw|60px|10vw|true|true” custom_padding_last_edited=”on|tablet” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.18.0″ text_font=”Lato||||||||” text_font_size=”22px” text_line_height=”1.8em” header_font=”Ubuntu||||||||” header_font_size=”35px” header_line_height=”1.2em” header_2_font_size=”32px” background_layout=”dark” text_font_size_tablet=”” text_font_size_phone=”18px” text_font_size_last_edited=”on|phone” header_font_size_tablet=”60px” header_font_size_phone=”36px” header_font_size_last_edited=”on|phone” header_2_font_size_tablet=”30px” header_2_font_size_phone=”22px” header_2_font_size_last_edited=”on|phone” global_colors_info=”{}”]

The castle state of Paleochora

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider color=”#ffffff” divider_weight=”5px” _builder_version=”4.16″ max_width=”100px” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.18.0″ text_font=”Ubuntu|300|||||||” text_text_color=”#FFFFFF” text_font_size=”17px” text_line_height=”1.8em” header_font=”||||||||” header_2_font=”PT Serif||||||||” header_2_font_size=”42px” header_2_line_height=”1.2em” text_orientation=”justify” background_layout=”dark” width=”100%” max_width_tablet=”100%” max_width_phone=”” max_width_last_edited=”on|tablet” custom_margin=”|||” text_font_size_tablet=”” text_font_size_phone=”16px” text_font_size_last_edited=”on|phone” header_2_font_tablet=”” header_2_font_phone=”” header_2_font_last_edited=”on|tablet” header_2_font_size_tablet=”” header_2_font_size_phone=”30px” header_2_font_size_last_edited=”on|desktop” text_text_align=”justify” global_colors_info=”{}”]

A visit to the ruined castle-state of Paliochora, to the east of Potamos, is imperative. There are countless stories and legends that accompany this medieval capital of the island and are mainly related to the tragic era of its destruction by the pirate Barbarossa. Today it inspires awe with the special atmosphere it gives off, perched on the steep rocks, and excites the imagination, transporting the visitor to other times with its mysterious charm. Inside the castle there were numerous churches, some of which survive today.

Karavas is the northernmost village of Kythira and spreads out on low hills, surrounded by dense vegetation and many waters. The tourist’s eye is lost in the green scenery, while this village can be a starting point for getting to know the northern coasts of Tsirigos, where the sandy, extensive beach of Platia ‘Ammos with crystal clear waters dominates.
